Six-Run Sixth Shucks CornBelters

River City Rascals News Release


O'Fallon, Mo. - Trailing 4-2 in the sixth inning, the Rascals (21-13) scored six runs on six hits against three pitchers to take an 8-4 lead, and the bullpen pitched hitless baseball the final 3 2/3 innings to make the score stand up while setting up a rubber game tomorrow morning.

River City took a 1-0 lead in the first after a one-out error allowed Doug Sanders to reach before Gerardo Avila single him to third, setting up an RBI groundout from Charlie Lisk.

In the fourth inning Avila was called out on strikes, then tossed out of the game before manager Steve Brook got some frustrations out as well before getting tossed for the second time in his career. That would come in to play in the sixth.

Rascal starter Keli'i Zablan pitched into and out of trouble the first four scoreless innings, inducing two double play balls to get out of jams before Chico Gomez lifted a hanging slider over the wall to start the fifth and tie the game at 1-1. Doug Sanders responded with a two-out single that scored Curran Redal to put River City back on top in the bottom of the frame 2-1.

Normal (13-20) responded with two homeruns in the sixth for a 4-2 lead but again the Rascals would respond.

After Justin Gill (2-0) finished the sixth, the Rascals sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom half. Bobby Burk's one-out single scored Lisk with a collision at the plate allowing Patton (who also singled in the inning) and Burk to advance to second and third. With Rascal skipper Steve Brook in the clubhouse following his ejection, a meeting on the mound after the Burk single allowed acting manager Dave Garcia and first base coach Caleb Curry to chat with Ben Hewett. It appeared a decision was made at that time to employ the suicide squeeze, and it was executed flawlessly by Patton at third and Hewett at the plate, who dropped down what would end up being a bunt single.

Hewett would then get in a rundown that would allow Burk to score from third as Hewett avoided a tag and advanced to third on a throwing error home. Redal stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and came in on a wild pitch before Doug Sanders hit a solo homerun to right-center for the sixth run of the inning.

Justin Gill pitched a perfect 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts before Dustin Umberger shut down Normal in order to finish the game in the ninth.

It's a quick turnaround for these two teams with first pitch in the rubber game set for Monday at 11:05 AM on Super Splash Day at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

NOTES:

-Eric Williams on-base streak ended tonight at 26 games, going 0-for-5.
