Normal CornBelters News Release

O'FALLON, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a big sixth inning and dropped the middle game of the series with the River City Rascals 8-4 on Sunday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

The Rascals tallied first in their opening at-bat, when Doug Sanders reached on a bad-hop single, went to third on a base hit to right by Gerardo Avila and scored on a ground out.

The CornBelters tied the game with the first home run of the season from Chico Gomez, a drive into the left-field bleachers to lead off the fifth inning.

River City took the lead with an unearned run in the fifth when Doug Sanders drove in Curran Redal with two outs after the inning was extended by an error to give the Rascals a 2-1 lead. The CornBelters regained the lead in the top of the sixth with Steven Felix led off with a walk and scored on a home run to left by Pat Trettel, his fifth round-tripper. With one out, Robert Brooks sent his second home run over the tall right-field wall to put the Belters ahead 4-2.

The Rascals countered with six runs in their half of the sixth. River City began by tying the game at 4-4 with four hits off Josh Joseph, who began the inning in relief of starter Jacob Liedka, with RBI's delivered by Bobby Burk and Ben Hewitt with a perfectly executed squeeze to end Joseph's night for reliever Kyle DiMartino. The Rascals took a 5-4 lead when Hewitt was caught in a rundown and Burk scored on an errant throw home. Hewitt survived the pickle and scored on a base hit by Curran Redal to send River City ahead 6-4, and Redal made it 7-4 when he scored on a wild pitch. Doug Sanders homered to right-center to end DiMartino's night and give the Rascals an 8-4 lead as Bobby Hillier went to the mound for the Belters to get the final out of the sixth inning.

Josh Joseph (1-2) took the loss while the win went to reliever Justin Gill (2-0).

The CornBelters conclude the series with a Monday morning contest. Left-hander Tyler Stovall (1-4, 5.28 ERA) starts for the CornBelters against Rascals right-hander Nick Kennedy (2-1, 3.27 ERA). First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. with WJBC.com pre-game at 10:50 from T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
