Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - The long ball ruled Sunday night's 7-3 game two showcase between the Grizzlies and Miners, as Southern Illinois slugged their way past the home club in a contest that provided five homeruns.
Gateway (16-19) again sputtered on the mound, as the Miners hung ten knocks on the Grizzlies that produced seven runs. Starter Pat Arnold (2-1) was charged the loss in his four innings of work that saw five earned runs on six hits and five walks.
Southern Illinois lefty Darrin Tew (2-0) was stingy in his outing, limiting the Grizzlies bats to just three runs on five hits in five frames.
Offensively for Gateway Jon Myers applied the majority of the home club's damage at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs to right field to up his season's homerun number to seven. Newly acquired outfielder and bopper Rogelio Noris delivered a home run as well in his Grizzlies debut in his 1-for-4 effort.
The Sauget club, that has now dropped five straight, was forced to dig deep into their bullpen for the second straight night. The relief group did their job.
Zac Treece, Gill Rehwinkel, and Paul Tremlin all saw action in the three hour and eight minute affair, as the threesome allowed just one run on four hits in four stanzas of combined exertion. Righty Tremlin was nearly spotless in his three innings of action, allowing just one hit with no runs, no walks, and three strikeouts.
The Grizzlies conclude their series with the Miners Monday night at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Chris Enourato (1-2) makes the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.
