Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (16-18) @ WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS (19-13)
Sunday, June 24 - 5:05 p.m. CT
Standard Bank Stadium - Crestwood, IL
Game #35 - Road Game #17 (16-18), (8-8)
RHP #39 Tommy Mendoza (3-2, 4.46 ERA) vs. RHP #27 Blayne Weller (0-0. 4.05 ERA)
Last time out...
The Windy City ThunderBolts used the home run to defeat the Joliet Slammers on Saturday night by a score of 4-2. Neither team had a hit until the fifth when Brandon Decker singled. With two outs and two on in scoring position, Bryan Burke hit a ball that deflected off Wander Alvino's glove for a single, scoring a run for Windy City. The Slammers responded right away in the top of the sixth. With two outs Hector Pellot and Erik Lis drew walks. Zach Mandelblatt smacked a single up the middle to score Pellot and tie the game. Joliet would take the lead on a hot shot off the bat of Brad Netzel that was ruled an error on third baseman Travis Weaver. Lis scored on the play to put Joliet up 2-1. But the bottom of the sixth would be their undoing as Chad Cregar smacked a solo home run to tie the game and a Brandon Decker two-run home run put Windy City on top for good.
For Starters...
Tommy "The Barber" Mendoza is coming off a rough outing on June 19 against Traverse City. He went 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs in a 13-6 loss for the Slammers. However the start before that against River City was his best of the season, as he went seven innings and only gave up two runs. He is one of four players on the Slammers with Triple-A experience. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.
Windy City woes...
Last night's loss dropped the Slammers record against the Windy City ThunderBolts to 1-3 on the season and 5-11 in franchise history.
Nieves means clutch...
Abel Nieves is hitting .478 in 23 AB with runners in scoring position.
Close games...
Seven of the last 10 games the Slammers have played have been decided by two runs or less. The Slammers are 4-3 in those six games. They are 0-3 in the other three contests. In their most recent series, the Slammers took two of three from the Schaumburg Boomers, all three of the games were decided by one run.
Lis heating up...
Hitting Coach and Designated Hitter/1st Baseman Erik Lis got off to a slow start this season but recently he's started to tear the cover off the ball. Lis has hit safely in nine of 10 games and is hitting .424 over the past 10 contests with a homer and six RBI. Overall on the season Lis has raised his average to .293 and has 3 HR and 15 RBI.
Mandelblatt up and down...
Zach Mandelblatt leads the Slammers in HR with 4 and RBI with 19. But he is last on the team in batting average as he's only hitting .202 on the season
Give me some relief!
In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 75 IP in June, they have a 5.76 ERA.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 3-14 in games when they make an error. They are 13-4 in games when they do not.
Out-hit...
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 13-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-14.
