Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
AVON, OH - For the second straight night, the Traverse City Beach Bums got all the offense they would need for the game in the first inning and got another strong pitching performance, this time from Bennett Whitmore and Mike Devine as the Beach Bums tied a team record with their seventh win in a row, downing the Lake Erie Crushers 6-2.
For the second straight night, the Beach Bums pounced in the first inning. Ryan Still and Brian Heere both walked to put runners on first and second for Jose Vargas who lined a single to center, scoring Still for a 1-0 TC lead. Chase Burch followed with a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, Kyle Colligan came up and delivered a single to left to score Heere and Vargas to make it 3-0 Traverse City.
Lake Erie would plate a run in the bottom of the inning as Daniel Bowman singled home Robby Kuzdale who had walked to lead off the inning and stole second.
From there it was all Beach Bums. In the third, Burch led off the frame with a homerun, his 15th of the year, to make it 4-1. TC pushed the lead to 5-1 in the seventh as with Jeff Flagg on second and Kyle Colligan on first, Sean Gusrang grounded a ball to second. The Crushers got the first out on the force at second, but Jason Taylor couldn't handle the relay throw at first allowing Gusrang to reach and Flagg to score to make it 5-1. A Kyle Eveland homer in the eighth made it 6-1 and a Russ Moldenhauer long ball in the ninth capped the scoring.
The pitching handled the rest for Traverse City as Bennett Whitmore pitched effectively through six innings. Whitmore (6-3) went six-plus inning allowing three hits and one run. After the left-hander ran into trouble in the seventh with a pair of walks, Mike Devine came in to put out the fire, retiring the next three batters in order, two of them on strikes, to get out of the frame. Devine then tossed the final two innings for his second save.
Offensively, Colligan had three hits and two RBI, giving him five runs batted in for the series.
The series finale comes up on Sunday as Jacob Clem (6-4, 3.04) on the mound for the Beach Bums against Pat Arnold (3-2, 3.93) for Lake Erie. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. EST with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 4:45 p.m.
