Calhoun Goes Eight Innings in Loss

Marion, IL - Daniel Calhoun pitched eight strong innings for the Southern Illinois Miners and fell short as the Windy City ThunderBolts defeated the Miners 2-1. Miners reliever Gabriel Shaw gave up a go-ahead home run to Chad Cregar in the top of the ninth inning to give Windy City a 2-1 lead.

Calhoun and ThunderBolts starter Mike Recchia exchanged scoreless innings through seven innings. Recchia struck out 11 batters and now holds the single season record for strikeouts (167) passing teammate Dustin Williams who had 157 last season.

Windy City took the lead off Calhoun in the top of the eighth inning with twou outs as third baseman CJ Gillman hit a base hit and RBI to score center fielder Bob Glover to give the ThunderBolts a 1-0 lead. The Miners tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning off ThunderBolts reliever Michael Click as Chad Maddox hit a sacrifice fly to score Jake Kaase.

The Miners had a lead off man in the bottom of the ninth in Carlos Mendez on first base but the Miners couldn't bring him in as the Miners would lose the game 2-1. The Miners fall to 52-36 on the season. The Miners and ThunderBolts wrap up a three game set on Sunday as the Miners send Shawn Gilblair to the mound against Blayne Weller. First pitch is at 5:05 pm.
