Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums walked off with a 5-4 win over the Midwest Sliders on Sunday night at Wuerfel Park for their second consecutive walk-off decision, both by identical scores.
Steve Young came up with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning after Midwest plated three runs in the top of the frame to tie the contest.
Midwest opened the scoring with a run in the fourth against Traverse City starter Weston Curles. Curles had retired the first eight batters before allowing a pair of two-out hits in the third. Anthony Albano connected on the first of two doubles in the contest with one out in the fourth, and he scored on a Dom Lombardi triple.
The Beach Bums had several chances early against Midwest starter Shawn Ravenscraft including having the bases loaded with no outs in the first, but it took until the sixth to break through. With two outs Zack Kalter and Brad Miller singled. Jake Whitesides followed with a double down the line in right on the first offering to score both runners and give the Beach Bums the lead. Whitesides later scored on a Brad Roblin double and Traverse City was up 3-1.
An insurance run crossed in the bottom of the eighth as the Beach Bums opened a 4-1 edge. Patrick Perry led off the inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, the second longest this season by a Beach Bums player. Perry has also hit safely in 14 straight at home, the longest streak in the Frontier League this season. Last night's hero Zack Kalter drove in Perry with a single into center.
Mike Takashima relieved Weston Curles in the seventh inning after Curles threw six frames and allowed just one run. Takashima retired the first seven batters that he faced before Anthony Albano posted his third hit of the game with one-out in the ninth. Takashima, signed yesterday, was making his pro debut. The Sliders got three straight hits to pull within 4-3 as Dom Lombardi singled home a run, Bryan Vickers singled, and Robbie Hine also knocked home a run with a single. Jeff Williams, who threw three innings last night, relieved Takashima, but Ryley Westman singled on the first pitch to tie the score.
Jeff Brown drew a leadoff four-pitch walk in the bottom of the ninth and was sacrificed to second by Brad Roblin to set the stage for Young's dramatic hit. Jake Whitesides was the Beach Bums Player of the Game after finishing 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Zack Kalter also had two hits for Traverse City.
The Beach Bums (33-28) took over sole possession of second place in the East Division with the win by virtue of Kalamazoo's win over Florence. Traverse City continues the series with Midwest tomorrow night in a 7:05 pm contest with RHP David Nathanson (9-2, 2.10) slated to make his return to the hill. Midwest counters with LHP Kyle Kearcher (5-3, 3.71).
