Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks announced several moves on Saturday in which they acquired experienced pitching for the final stretch of the season.
The RiverHawks signed veteran pitcher Levi Romero, a former Texas farmhand. They acquired pitcher Mike McTamney from Sioux City of the independent American Association in exchange for a player to be named later. Rockford dealt veteran pitchers Chris Schutt and Jim Paduch to Lincoln of the American Association in exchange for a player to be named later.
Romero, a 24-year-old Venezuelan, has pitched professionally since the Houston Astros signed him in November 2000. The right-hander has pitched for their affiliates in the Venezuelan and Dominican Summer Leagues, and in the Arizona, Appalachian, New York-Penn and South Atlantic Leagues. Romero has a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2-to-1.
Romero made a total of five starts this season among Rookie-level Surprise, low Class A Clinton and high A Bakersfield in the Rangers organization. He was 0-2 with a 4.82 ERA.
McTamney, a 25-year-old right-hander, has spent his four-year career in independent baseball. He was 1-4 with a 9.31 ERA in nine appearances earlier this year with Brockton of the Can-Am League. He was traded to Sioux City for a player to be named on June 26. With the Explorers, McTamney was 0-1 with a 9.35 ERA in six relief appearances. McTamney has 2-Year status in the Frontier League.
Schutt, Rockford's Opening Night starter, was 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 15 appearances. He had been demoted to the bullpen at the all-star break. Paduch was 3-6 with a 5.07 ERA.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
