River City Rascals News Release

Evansville, IN - A comeback effort by the River City Rascals came up one big hit shy and the Evansville Otters hung on to win 7-6 Sunday night at Bosse Field.

The Rascals left the bases loaded twice and left the tying run in the ninth inning at third base, leaving 12 total runners throughout the night.

River City started the game cleaning up runners. Right out of the gates, Brad Hough walked with one out and stole a base. With two outs and Hough at second, Jeff Miller drove a ball back through the middle to make it 1-0 Rascals. A hot Ryan Wehrle then stepped to the plate and connected on his third home run of the week to make it 3-0 off Ricky Bauer.

Chris Clem started for the Rascals and was quickly touched up for three runs. The first four reached against the right-hander and with the bases loaded, Clem tossed a wild pitch to score the first Evansville run. Jose Pineda would then come up with runners at second and third and no outs to deliver a game tying single. The Otters would leave Pineda at second in the inning, but left with a 3-3 tie after one.

The game stayed at threes until the fifth when Clem was chased from the game. Daniel Burton got a favorable hop over second baseman Jacob DeBoer with the bases loaded to drive in two. DeBoer possibly could have turned an inning ending double play if not for the hop.

Evansville scored another run in the sixth off Adam Tollefson to make it 6-3. Nick Salotti doubled home Pineda with two outs.

That is when the Rascals made their move. In the seventh against Tristan Facer, the Rascals manufactured a run with a double, ground ball and sacrifice fly by Miller to make it 6-4. River City then tied the game in the eighth.

Phil Laurent singled to start the inning and would later score on a wild pitch. DeBoer would later come around on a pinch hit single by Andrew Sweet. Tied at six the Rascals had a chance to take the lead off newly entered Justin Smith. With the bases then loaded after a Luke Barganier double and a Hough walk, Will Basom struck out swinging and Miller flew out to end the threat.

Evansville scored a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Tyson Povey. Tollefson allowed a one out single to Luke Hetherington. Then Desmond Jones walked the bases loaded before Povey drove in Hetherington.

Up 7-6, Wehrle stood 90 feet away as the tying run with one out. But Smith got DeBoer to ground out and Sweet to pop up to end the game. Smith (1-0) picked up the win for Evansville. Tollefson (3-2) suffered the loss going 3.0 innings.

The Rascals (26-35) and Otters (29-32) play game two of the series at 12:05 p.m. Monday from Bosse Field.
