MARION, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks avoided late-inning disaster and inched closer to the top of the Frontier League West on Sunday.
Jason James hit a home run to account for the Rockford offense and three relievers combined to escape scoring threats in the final two innings as the RiverHawks beat Southern Illinois, 3-2.
The RiverHawks moved up to four games behind the division-leading Miners. Rockford has won seven of its last nine.
Two home runs accounted for all the scoring. Tim Dorn hit a two-run homer, his 13th of the year, to dead center in the fourth inning for the Miners. James hit a three-run homer, his eighth of the season, beyond the bullpen in right field in the fifth inning.
The Miners left two runners on in the eighth inning and, despite three walks in the ninth, left the bases loaded to end the game. James Cramphin walked two, but retired Mike Scanzano on a fly to center to end the game. Cramphin got the final two outs to earn his third save.
Rookie starter Tim Flattery (2-1) went six innings for the win. Jeremy Dow (2-9) lasted six innings and took the loss.
Robbie Knapp was 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He has hit safely in each game since a July 14 trade from Washington to Rockford. Robert Sabates was 0-for-3 and his 10-game hitting streak ended.
Game two of the series is at 7:05 p.m. Monday. The game will be broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) on at the team website.
