Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored three runs in the final three innings, but an unearned run from the Florence Freedom in the bottom of the eighth allowed the Freedom to escape with a 4-3 win on Tuesday night.
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the seventh, the Beach Bums loaded the bases on consecutive singles from Chase Burch, Marcus Nidiffer, and Zach Kometani with one out. Sean Gurang grounded a ball to the third base side of the mound. Freedom pitcher Dan Jensen picked up the ball, but threw the ball to the screen allowing Burch and Nidiffer to score and cut the lead to 3-2.
In the eighth, Traverse City had a chance with runners on the corners and one out, but off a groundball from Burch, Junior Arrojo made an excellent backhand stop to start an improbable double play to end the inning. During the bottom half of the frame, Florence put runners on second and third with one out. After Nick Capito came on to strike out David Harris, Ryan Skellie hit a hard grounder to short that was bobbled, allowing Pablo Bermudez to score, pushing the Freedom lead to 4-2.
The run proved to be big as the Beach Bums got a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Jeremy Banks, but were unable to push the tying run across.
Florence jumped out early with a solo homer by Arrojo in the bottom of the first and a two run shot from Harris in the fourth.
Dan Jensen (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs over seven innings. Jorge Marban recorded his fourth save. Jake Sabol (4-1) took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs on four hits during 7+ innings of work.
Offensively, Taylor Wrenn and Kometani had multi-hit games, the second such game in a row for both. For Wrenn, the hits extended his hitting streak to 15 contests.
Game two of the series comes up on Wednesday at 6:35 pm with Mike Devine (0-1, 3.78) on the mound for Traverse City against Daniel DeSimone (4-1, 2.14) for the Freedom. Coverage starts with the Budweiser Traverse City Beach Bums Pregame Show on Sunny Country 101.9 FM at 6:15.
