Normal, Il - The Washington Wild Things (13-8), presented by Washington Financial defeated the Frontier League West Division Leading Normal Cornbelters (15-7) 5-1 at the Corn Crib Tuesday night.

Right-handed pitcher Shawn Sanford turned in a stellar complete game performance. The righty was impressive as he shut down the Belters, who lead the league in hitting. Sanford allowed only one run on five hits, walking one and striking out seven batters.

Washington got on the board in the second inning when Shain Stoner's base hit drove in Stewart Ijames and Jim Vahalik, giving Washington a two run advantage.

In the fourth inning Vahalik tripled, driving in Ijames. AJ Nunziato added to the score with a sacrifice fly that drove in Vahalik. Washington added another run when Jovan Rosa's ground ball plated Stoner. Washington held a 5-0 lead.

In the seventh inning Normal scored their only run of the game when Matt Wright smacked in a solo home run.

The Wild Things and Cornbelters meet for game two of this three game set Wednesday evening when Anthony Collazo will be on the hill for Washington. Air time on WJPA 95.3 FM is 7:55 p.m.

The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park on Friday when they will host the Evansville Otters. Game tickets are available at the box office.
