Normal CornBelters News Release

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, mustered only five hits as Washington starter Shawn Sanford went the distance in a 5-1 Wild Things win on Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.

The Wild Things scored a pair of runs in the second inning when Stewart Ijames and Jim Vahalik each walked with one out and moved to second and third when Darien Sandford reached on a controversial two-out bunt single when he ran around the waiting tag on the first base line. The next hitter, Shain Stoner, lined a single to left to score both runs.

Washington added three more in the fourth with a lead-off walk to Ijames followed by a triple by Vahalik, who scored on a sacrifice fly to the left center field wall by A.J. Nunziato. Stoner scored after two more base hits with the RBI recorded by Jovan Rosa to give the guests a 5-0 lead.

Sanford faced the minimum number of CornBelters hitters through 6.2 innings thanks to three double plays but gave up the first baserunner he couldn't erase in the seventh when Matt Wright homered to left center to cut the Belters deficit to 5-1.

Sanford (4-0) walked one and struck out seven for the victory. Ross Davis (1-2) went five innings in his first start of the season, giving up seven hits while walking four and striking out seven in the loss.

The series continues on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. start time.

THE NIBLET : The CornBelters are still seeking host families for the 2013 season. The "Host Family Program" provides players with a home away from home. It enables them to live with a family, couple or individual in the Bloomington-Normal area. It is derived from a variety of factors from a player's standpoint. Such factors include: the difficulty in finding a lease for just several months, the possibility of playing for the CornBelters for a limited time and/or the limited salaries that accompany professional baseball at this level of play.
