Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored three runs in each of their first three at bats to record an 11-3 win over the Florence Freedom in the rubber game of a three-game series. The contest was played in front of a season high crowd of 5,118 on a warm Volunteer Appreciation Night at Wuerfel Park.
The first two batters of the game reached for the Beach Bums against Florence starter Baron Short. Corey Whiting drew a walk and stole second. James Guerrero then drew a walk and a double steal put Whiting at third and Guerrero at second and the throw went into the outfield enabling Whiting to score. Mike Epping drove in Guerrero and with two outs Brian Lapin singled home Epping.
Baron Short would not make it out of the second inning, retiring the first batter before hitting Brad Miller and walking Corey Whiting. Miller and Whiting executed another double steal but Miller would be thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice. Mike Epping drove home his second run with a single and Mike Victor would also drive in a run with a single in the inning while James Guerrero scored when Epping was caught in a rundown.
The Beach Bums scored three more in the bottom of the third after Florence put two on the board on a two-run double by Billy Mottram in the top of the inning off Beach Bums starter Shawn Joy. Kyle Maunus led off with a double and scored on a single by Brad Miller. James Guerrero doubled home a run with two outs, and Mike Epping also contributed a run-scoring double.
Shawn Joy threw five innings and struck out a career high six to earn his first win of the season. He allowed three runs on six hits. B.J. Hagen threw two innings of relief while Ryan Kruszka and Greg Ford each tossed a scoreless frame.
Traverse City scored two more runs on an odd play in the seventh. Mike Epping hit a roller to the right side with the bases loaded and James Guerrero collided with Florence second baseman Billy Mottram.
The Beach Bums posted 11 hits in the game. Mike Epping had three of those, driving in five runs. Kyle Maunus, Brad Miller, and James Guerrero also had two hits in the contest. Guerrero and Corey Whiting scored three times.
The Beach Bums will welcome the Washington Wild Things tomorrow night in a 7:05 pm contest. RHP Brett Bostelman (5-0, 1.30) goes against RHP Zach Groh (0-2, 4.35) on Kowalski T-Shirt giveaway night for the first 500 fans aged 13 and over.
