Lake Erie Crushers News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums tied a Wuerfel Park record with three home runs on their way to a 9-5 win over the Lake Erie Crushers Friday night. The win snapped the seven-game winning streak that the Crushers held entering the game.
The Beach Bums grabbed the lead early for the second straight night, scoring in the first on an RBI-groundout by Chase Burch to take a 1-0 lead.
The Crushers took advantage of a Beach Bum error in the fourth when Traverse City starter Jonny Bravo couldn't handle Jodam Rivera's drag bunt. After an Andrew Davis walk, Rivera would score on Eddie Tisdale's single and Davis came around on an Andrew Saylor base knock to give Lake Erie a 2-1 lead.
Traverse City knotted the score in the fifth Bobby Spain came across the plate on an Andrew Marshall ground out but Lake Erie responded to retake a 3-2 lead when Eddie Tisdale scored on a passed ball by Marshall.
However, the Beach Bums proceeded to grab the lead in the ensuing frame against Crushers starter Phil Rummel. Rummel retired the first two batters of the inning on three pitches but a walk to Chase Burch and a base hit for J.T. Hall set up C.J. Ziegler's three-run home run that gave Traverse City a 5-3 lead it would not lose for the remainder of the contest.
Traverse City extended its advantage in the seventh on the strength of an RBI-double by Matt Brown who proceeded to score on Michael Diaz's first home run of the season and the Beach Bums took an 8-3 lead to the eighth.
Andrew Saylor ripped a double to off the right-center field wall to score Travis Vetters to pull Lake Erie back within four, but a Ziegler home run would move the lead right back to five entering the ninth. Dom Duggan tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the ninth but it would be to no avail, as Beach Bums rookie Trent DeLazzer closed things out in his professional debut.
The Crushers (19-14) open up a series with first-place Oakland County Saturday at All Pro Freight Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05. RHP Matt Smith will oppose RHP Wayde Kitchens for the Cruisers.
