Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - C. J. Ziegler clubbed two homeruns while Michael Diaz added another as the Traverse City Beach Bums won their series finale over the Lake Erie Crushers 9-5.
The Beach Bums got on the board early as in the first inning, a walk and a double had runners on second and third with one out when Chase Burch grounded out, bringing home Matt Brown for a 1-0 TC lead.
That lead would hold until the fourth when errors and wildness allowed Lake Erie to load the bases. RBI singles from Eddie Tisdale and Drew Saylor put the Crushers up 2-1. The Beach Bums responded in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Marshall grounded out to drive in C. J. Ziegler. Lake Erie would counter with another unearned run in the sixth to go up 3-2.
On this FANtastic Fireworks Friday, Traverse City treated their fans to an in-game display starting in the sixth. With two outs, Chase Burch walked and J. T. Hall singled ahead of Ziegler who took a fastball over the outer half the opposite way, clearing the rightfield fence putting the Beach Bums ahead, 5-3.
It was only just the beginning, however, as in the seventh, Andrew Marshall led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Matt Brown stepped up and drove a ground rule double to left, scoring Marshall for a 6-3 Beach Bums lead. Two batters later, Michael Diaz uncorked his first long ball of the season for an 8-3 edge.
The Crushers would score a run in the top of the eighth, but TC would counter in the bottom of the inning. Leading off against Jon Durket who was making his professional debut, Ziegler took the first strike that Durket threw of his career over the leftfield fence for a towering homer and a 9-4 advantage. Lake Erie got one last tally in during the top of the ninth to create the final margin.
Richard Folmer (1-1) picked up the win in relief going 2.1 innings. Jonny Bravo started and went 5.2 allowing one earned run, striking out four, the first of which was the 100th of his professional career. Trent DeLazzer made his pro debut for the Beach Bums pitching the ninth. Phil Rummel (2-3) took the loss for Lake Erie.
Offensively, on top of the homers, J. T. Hall went 2-for-4 extending his hitting streak to eight games. It was the sixth time in the streak Hall has recorded multiple hits and the 13th time this season he has achieved the feat, tops on the team. Diaz and Brown also had two hits apiece for TC.
The Beach Bums see the in-state rival Kalamazoo come to town on Saturday night. Kevin Reese (4-2, 2.57) starts for the Beach Bums against Javier Gomez (0-0, 11.70) for the Kings. It's a Silent Auction Saturday at Wuerfel Park where the team will be auctioning off Beach Bums experiences with the proceeds benefitting the YMCA. The Kings' series will wrap up on Monday with a special appearance by the Blue Angels crew at the ballpark. For more information or tickets, call 231-943-0100 or visit tcbeachbums.com.
