Washington Wild Things News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich. - Kevin Hammons hit two batters in a row, one with the bases loaded, in the bottom of the eighth as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, lost 5-4 to Kalamazoo in the rubber match of the three-game series.
Michael Parker had three hits and an RBI and Luis Rivera hit his third home run for Washington.
The Wild Things jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Chris Sidick singled to lead off the game and advanced to second on a Mark McGonigle groundout. Michael Parker then singled home Sidick for the first run.
Kalamazoo answered in the bottom of the second after Jett Ruiz hit a solo home run. Washington scored single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings to retake the lead 3-1.
In the top of the third Parker doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Jacob Dempsey fly ball to right. John Delaney then walked and an Adam Amar ground ball scored Parker from third. Denny Duron scored on a Sidick ground out to score the Wild Things' third run in the top of the fourth.
Luis Rivera homered in the top of the sixth to extend the Washington lead to 4-1. Kalamazoo answered again in the bottom of the inning. After a one-out walk to Jeff Helps, Matt Maloney doubled Helps to third. Brendan Murphy then homered, scoring Helps and Maloney and tying the game at four. Macfarland then walked Jordon Yost, finishing his night.
Macfarland allowed four runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out six and walked three in the start for the Wild Things.
Washington stranded runners on second and third in the top of the eighth. Jacob Dempsey led off with a single and Joel Hartman, pinch running for Dempsey, stole second. After a Delaney flyout, Amar advanced to first on a Brooks Robinson error. A balk moved Hartman and Amar to third and second, respectively, but Alan Robbins and Luis Rivera each grounded out to end the threat.
Kalamazoo took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. After two outs, Kevin Hammons walked Maloney and Murphy and then hit pinch hitter Steve Malvagna to load the bases. Hammons then hit Joseph Poulter to score Maloney and give the Kings a 5-4 lead. Hammons pitched 2.2 innings for Washington in the losing effort, allowing the one run. He walked two and hit two batters.
Curt Dixon pitched six innings and allowed four runs on eight hits in the start for Kalamazoo and Guido Fonseca Jr. picked up his third save.
