Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Thursday's Opening Night game between the Bowie Baysox and the Richmond Flying Squirrels was postponed in the fifth inning after the Baysox had worked their way to a 1-0 lead on the strength of a solid Double-A debut by lefty starter Zach Britton.
Britton maintained a perfect game through the first three and two-thirds innings before surrendering a double to Flying Squirrels left fielder Thomas Neal on a deep fly ball that fell just out of reach for Baysox right fielder Miguel Abreu.
Pressure began to build on Britton to get through the top of the fifth inning as the rain started to fall and he coughed up two singles amidst an increasingly torrential downpour before officials suspended the game at 8:18 p.m. Britton headed for shelter with three strikeouts under his belt and no walks in his first game with the Baysox.
The Baysox grabbed their lead during a promising fourth inning where DH Paco Figueroa, 3B Brandon Waring and 1B Robbie Widlansky each hit singles in succession to load the bases. Caleb Joseph hit a ground ball through the gap at shortstop to drive Figueroa home for the Baysox first run of the 2010 campaign. LF Tyler Henson followed with a ground ball to third base, but no run was scored as Waring was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice. The inning ended as second baseman Ryan Adams hit a ground ball to Squirrels third baseman Conor Gillaspie for a 5-2-3 double play.
The game will be resumed Friday starting at 6:05 p.m. and will be completed as a nine-inning game. It will be resumed with one out, runners on first and second and Squirrels C Jackson Williams at bat. Per Minor League Baseball rules, Friday's originally scheduled game will be seven innings long and will begin following the completion of the first game. Fans with tickets dated for April 8 can redeem those tickets at the box office for a ticket of equal value for a later Baysox game of their choice.
The starting pitcher for the first game is yet to be determined, but the second game's starter is expected to be Steve Johnson, as was originally planned.
