Trenton Thunder News Release

Trenton, NJ - It was a picture perfect Opening Night at Waterfront Park, as the sunshine and World Series trophy both shined at the 2010 home opener. The 2010 Thunder also got off to a gleaming start, shutting out the Erie SeaWolves 4-0 in front of 7,216 on Thursday night.

Despite starting pitcher Christian Garcia being pulled early due to an upper body, the Trenton bullpen and hitters did enough to preserve their first Opening Day win since 2004.

With two effective starting pitchers on the mound, it was a quiet start, with both teams combining for just 1 hit through the first 3.1 innings. That changed in the bottom of the 3rd inning, when Luis Nunez rolled a ground ball up the 3rd base line, and Erie 3B Santos De Leon let the ball roll fair, which allowed Nunez to reach base safely with 2 outs. The next hitter, Austin Krum, drove in the first run of the year for the Thunder by hitting an RBI double into right field, scoring Nunez from first.

After only 1 hit between both teams in the 4th and 5th innings, Trenton cashed in some insurance in the bottom of the 6th inning with 3 runs off starting pitcher Jon Kibler and RHPLuis Marte. Austin Krum, Austin Romine and Brandon Laird each scored a run in the inning.

After Wilkins Arias and Noel Castillo shutout the Erie batters in the 7th and 8th innings respectively, Grant Duff came on to close out the SeaWolves in order in the top of the 9th inning.

The Thunder and SeaWolves meet tomorrow night for the second game of a four game set from Waterfront Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
