New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Hampshire's Brad Emaus knocked in Callix Crabbe to score the game winner in the sixth inning as the Fisher Cats escaped with a 5-4 win over the New Britain Rock Cats in the 2010 season opener on Thursday night.
Emaus finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBI, but it was his single to third in the sixth that put the Fisher Cats back on top for good after letting an early 4-0 lead slip away.
The Fisher Cats jumped on Carlos Gutierrez - the Minnesota Twins' top draft pick in 2008 - for four runs in the first inning. Center fielder Darin Mastroianni - down 0-2 in the count - led off the inning with a blast to left field to put the Fisher Cats on the board. Crabbe followed with a single and came around to score on Emaus' one-out double. Gutierrez then issued a two walks sandwiched around a groundout to load up the bases with two outs. That set the stage for Brian Jeroloman, who lined a single down the left field line to knock in two runs.
In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats cut the lead in half. Steve Singleton doubled to right field before Juan Portes launched a two-out homer over the left field wall.
The Rock Cats held off the Fisher Cats through the fifth inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats continued to claw back with back-to-back singles by Danny Lehmann and Ben Revere. A wild pitch by Kyle Drabek allowed both runners to advance bases before Steve Singleton's groundout knocked in Lehmann to bring the Rock Cats to within one. A passed ball then allowed Revere to score from third to tie the game.
Drabek (1-0) - one of the Blue Jays' top prospects - finished the night with eight strikeouts. He allowed three earned runs on four hits. Luis Perez struck out five in three shutout innings in relief. Daniel Farquhar picked up his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.
Gutierrez settled down to finish with four runs on seven hits. Cole DeVries (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one unearned run and three hits in 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
