Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels' inaugural game against the Bowie Baysox was suspended in the top of the fifth inning due to rain on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md. The contest will resume at 6:05 PM on Friday and be played in its entirety with Richmond trialing Bowie 1-0 in the top of the fifth. A seven-inning game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended contest.

The first pitch in Flying Squirrels history was thrown at 7:07 PM as Bowie left-hander Zach Britton missed with a ball to Richmond lead-off batter Darren Ford. The first hit in Flying Squirrels history was delivered by Richmond left fielder Thomas Neal as he doubled down the right field line with two outs in the top of the fourth inning - ending a string of 11 consecutive batters retired by Britton.

Richmond's defense kept Bowie off of the board early as right fielder Roger Kieschnick gunned down Caleb Joseph at home ending the bottom of the second inning.

The Baysox managed to cash in on their next scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning as four straight singles, including a RBI base hit from Joseph, off of Flying Squirrels starter Mike MacDonald put Bowie out in front 1-0. Richmond third baseman Connor Gillaspie followed by making a pair of huge plays including throwing out Brandon Waring at home and starting a 5-2-3 inning-ending double play to help the Flying Squirrels out of a bases loaded, no out jam.

Richmond put a pair of runners on base with back-to-back hits from Michael Ambort and Nick Noonan with one out in the top of the fifth; however, heavy rain stalled the Flying Squirrels' rally and forced the game to be suspended.

Britton, the 2009 Carolina League Pitcher of the Year and #3 prospect in the Baltimore Orioles organization according to Baseball America, tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings prior to the rain, allowing just the three hits while striking out three and walking none. MacDonald gave up just the one run through four innings of work on five hits with no strikeouts and two walks.

Left-hander Clayton Tanner, rated as the #23 prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization according to Baseball America, is scheduled to get the start opposite Bowie right-hander Steve Johnson in Friday's seven-inning affair.
