Baysox Nearly No-Hit in Friday Night Defeat

RICHMOND, V.A - The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, were nearly no-hit on Friday night, falling to the Richmond Flying Squirrels by a final of 4-2 from The Diamond.

Bowie (10-9) did not score a run or record a hit for the first eight innings. Richmond starting right-hander Hayden Birdsong (W, 1-1) threw five shutout and hitless innings with five strikeouts to set the tone while reliever Tanner Kiest threw a scoreless and hitless seventh and eighth inning and collected three strikeouts.

Richmond (10-9) scored the game's first run in the third on an RBI single by Andy Thomas off Bowie starting right-hander Trace Bright (L, 0-2).

The Orioles No. 16 prospect worked his way out of trouble, minimized the damage and threw five innings of one-run ball, allowed four hits and three walks and totaled six strikeouts in the loss. The 23-year-old now owns a 2.41 ERA through his first four starts of the year with 23 strikeouts over 18.2 innings pitched.

The Flying Squirrels tacked on two more runs in the seventh after Will Wilson doubled in a pair off left-handed reliever Ryan Hennen. A bases loaded walk drawn by Adrián Sugastey against right-handed reliever Dylan Heid in the eighth extended Richmond's lead to 4-0.

Needing three more outs to complete a combined no-hitter, Richmond's no-hit bid would be broken up by Frederick Bencosme after his leadoff single to right off Tyler Myrick (S, 2). The Orioles No. 27 prospect is tied for second in the Eastern League with 22 hits on the season.

With two outs in the ninth, TT Bowens drove in the only two runs of the game for the Baysox with a two-run double down the right-field line. Bowens now leads the Eastern League with 18 RBI on the season.

With the tying run at the plate, Samuel Basallo grabbed a bat and pinch hit in the six spot in the order but grounded out to second to end the game.

The Baysox continue their six-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels tomorrow night at 6:05 pm. LHP John Michael Bertrand (0-0, 2.75 ERA) will go for Richmond against a pitcher to be determined for Bowie.
