Chesapeake Baysox News Release

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (30-34) shut out Portland (27-38) for the second consecutive night 2-0 as they swept the Sea Dogs for their season-high seventh consecutive win.

The Baysox pitching staff retired 16 consecutive batters to finish the game and combined to allow just one hit during the course of the game.

"Starting pitching man, wow," said Manager Gary Kendall. "We keep pitching like that, throwing a lot of strikes we are going to do well. Everybody did a nice job. [The bullpen] has been really good. It all starts with pitching and defense and we got that tonight."

Baysox left-handed starting pitcher Jake Pettit pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters while walking two in the win.

"I had good command of my two-seam and my fastball and everything just worked off that," Pettit said. "I felt really good tonight and healthy - it was probably one of my best starts of the year. I was making the pitches when I needed to and a lot of times I have trouble getting that third pitch for a strike."

The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the third inning against Portland starter Chris Hernandez. Catcher Allan de San Miguel drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Antoan Richardson. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop singled to center field to move Richardson to third base and he scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Rhyne Hughes to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

Bowie added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Richardson reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a single by Schoop. Richardson advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored when shortstop Manny Machado hit a lead off single to center field to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

"We have to find ways to generate runs and if you look at tonight's game, a 2-0 win, we are going to win games by moving guys over and playing small ball," Richardson said. "Every time I have an opportunity to do those things and the coaches gives me the green light, I am going to try and make things happen to get some runs on the board."

Left-handed reliever Mike Belfiore maintained the shutout with two and one-third scoreless innings to follow Pettit. He did not allow a hit while striking out one batter. Baysox closer Greg Burke pitched the final one and one-third innings of the game and did not allow a hit to record his 13th save of the season.

The Baysox are home through Sunday, June 17 for a six game home stand. Some of the highlights include the Boy Scout Campout Friday, June 15, Louie's Birthday Bash Saturday, June 16 and a Father's Day Celebration Sunday, June 16.

RHP Sean Gleason (1-1, 5.60) is scheduled to take the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team begins a three game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He will be opposed by RHP Joel Carreno (1-3, 4.25).
