Baysox Hang 17 on R-Phils in Regular Season Home Finale
August 29, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(READING, PA) - Coming off their most important win of the season, the Fightin Phils were due for a letdown in their final regular season game at FirstEnergy Stadium. Knowing they have at least two more games at home to start the Eastern League Division Series next week against the Thunder, the visiting Baysox brought it in the series finale. Anderson Feliz was electric with three doubles, a home run, and seven runs batted in, and the rest of the lineup did its part with 17 runs on 23 hits. Mike Baumann (6-2) fanned eight over five-and-two-thirds, allowing just a two-run home run to Josh Stephen in the second for the R-Phils only runs. The 23 hits allowed were the most by Fightins pitching since September 2, 2015 against the Binghamton Mets, when the B-Mets had 21. With a season-high crowd of 9,270, the Reading Fightin Phils finish the 2019 regular season with a total attendance figure of 398,314.
Bowie wasted no time in the first, getting back-to-back doubles from Ryan McKenna and Feliz to go up 1-0. With two outs, Yusniel Diaz snuck a flyball down the right field line for his 52nd run batted in and a 2-0 advantage. McKenna's two-RBI double was the fourth and final hit in the top of the second, digging the Fightins an early 4-0 deficit before Stephen ripped his 12th home run onto the roof over the pool in right field.
Diaz' solo shot pushed the lead to 5-2 in the third, and three more runs came across in the fourth on a two-RBI double from Feliz and another two-bagger from cleanup hitter Carlos Perez. Leading 8-2, the fifth inning was just one of two that the Baysox didn't score.
In the sixth, Preston Palmeiro came through with a two-out, two-RBI double to get the Baysox into double digits. But they didn't stop there, with Feliz hitting a three-run homer after back-to-back singles from Cedric Mullins and McKenna to open the top of the seventh.
During their last ups in the ninth, Bowie scored four more times on a trio of doubles from Feliz, Perez, and right fielder T.J. Nichting. Lost in the clutter was Fightins pitchers totaling nine strikeouts to set the Eastern League's all-time single-season record with 1,240. Reading ends its 2019 home slate with a 42-29 overall record at FirstEnergy Stadium, including a 22-14 mark during the second half.
America's Classic Ballpark is proud to be a part of Pennsylvania's Americana Region and was voted the #1 stadium in all of Double-A by MiLB's Ben Hill.
