Baysox Fall Short in Loss to Harrisburg

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Friday night, but the bats then went quiet as Harrisburg rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener of the three game series. After a quiet second half of the game, the Baysox put two runners on base in the ninth inning, but failed to push the tying run across.

Washington Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon was in Bowie for the night, playing with the Harrisburg Senators on an MLB Rehab Assignment. He played seven innings in the field and went 1-for-4 with a single and three strikeouts.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning against Harrisburg starter Colin Bates. Brandon Snyder hit a lead-off single to left field and moved to third base on a double to center field from Garabez Rosa. Jason Esposito brought one run home with a groundout and Michael Burgess brought a second run home with a single to left field to give Bowie a 2-0 lead.

Harrisburg snatched the lead in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. Brian Goodwin started things off with a solo homer to right field and Gene Escat then replaced Berry on the mound. Mario Lisson hit a one-out single to left field and Kevin Keyes was hit by a pitch with two outs. Pedro Severino then singled to right field to bring home the tying run before Escat issued a walk to load the bases. Escat then hit Tony Renda to force home another run and give the Senators a 3-2 lead.

Berry had one of his best outings of the season, throwing six innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out four in the no decision. Escat recorded two outs in the seventh and allowed two runs on two hits, one walk and two hit batters in the loss. Reliever Kenn Kasparek threw the final 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Bates earned the win for Harrisburg, throwing six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking two.

RHP Parker Bridwell (1-3, 4.75) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second game in a three-game home series against the Harrisburg Senators. He will be opposed by RHP Austin Voth (2-2, 3.66). Saturday is the Baysox Touch-A-Truck event, presented by Miss Utility and Sunday is Toy Story Day beginning at 2:05 p.m.
