
Baysox Fall Short, 8-6

(Bowie, MD) - A season high 10,499 fans were in attendance to see the Baysox take on first place Akron on Independence Day, but the home team's late fireworks fell short as they dropped their series opener to Akron, 8-6.
The Baysox got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. Luis Jimenez singled home Ruddy Yan, who reached on a double, to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
Baysox starter Chris Waters got off to a bit of a rough start in the third inning and the Aeros took advantage, jumping out to a 2-1 lead. Waters led off the inning issuing a free pass to Trevor Crowe. Asdrubal Cabrera would then follow that up with a single to centerfield, which moved Crowe to third base. Brian Barton would follow Cabrera up with a single of his own, scoring both Crowe and Cabrera for the 2-1 lead. Waters would settle down though and get Ryan Goleski to fly into a double play and Rodney Choy Foo to ground out, ending the inning.
Akron would get to Waters again the in the fifth and put four key runs on the board, capped by a three-run home run by Rodney Choy Foo, putting Akron ahead, 6-1. RHP Rommie Lewis would then enter the game to spell Waters and get the Baysox out of the inning with no further damage, getting Chris Gimenez to strike out swinging and Brandon Pinckney to ground out ending the inning.
The Baysox would rally back to cut the Aeros lead to 6-4, scoring two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh. Val Majewski put the Baysox to within two runs, capping the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh, cutting the lead to, 6-4.
Akron would then stretch the lead back to three, when Rodney Choy Foo connected for his second home run of the game, making it 7-4 Akron.
The Baysox would battle back and get to within a run in the bottom of the eighth. Ruddy Yan, got the scoring started with an RBI triple, scoring Paco Figueroa, cutting the lead to, 7-5. Matt Cepicky would double in the next at bat, scoring Yan, cutting the lead to, 7-6.
Akron would steal the momentum back in the ninth, putting up another run, when David Haehnel replace Lewis in the game. Trevor Crowe led off the frame with a single and Asdrubal Cabrera would score Crowe on a double to right field, but Cabrera would be thrown out at third, trying to stretch the hit into a triple for the first out of the inning. Haehnel would survive inning though with no further damage, getting Brian Barton to fly out and Jordan Brown to strike out ending the inning.
The Baysox would try to rally in the ninth, with Bryan Bass doubling and Blake Davis being issued a free pass, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Jeff Fiorentino would come off the bench to pinch for Paco Figueroa, but the rally fell short as Fiorentino grounded out to first for the final out of the game, giving Akron the series opening win, 8-6. The Baysox camoflauge jerseys that the players were wearing on the 4th were auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting U.S. Army Family Readiness Group.
Shawn Nottingham picked up the win for the Aeros and moved to (7-5) on the year. LHP Chris Waters took the loss and dropped to (4-7) on the season.
The Baysox take on the Aeros in a doubleheader on Thursday at Prince George's Stadium, beginning at 6:05 pm. RHP Rosman Garcia will get the start for the Baysox and square off against LHP Chuck Lofgren for the Aeros in game one and RHP Radhames Liz and RHP Joe Ness will match up in game two.
