Chesapeake Baysox News Release
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron offense exploded after a sixth inning rain delay, scoring nine runs over the final three innings to defeat the Baysox 12-3. Third baseman Josh Bell crushed his fourth home run of the season, but the bullpen could not contain the Aeros as they fall to 63-58 on the season.
The Baysox struck early against Aeros left-hander Scott Barnes, loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker led off the game with a double and center fielder Danny Figueroa drew a free pass to put runners at first and second. A single by Bell loaded them up for first baseman Steve Torrealba, who grounded into a double-play as Tucker crossed the plate with the first run of the game.
Akron answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning against Baysox right-hander Brandon Erbe. Jose Constanza drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Adam Donachie. One batter later, Carlos Santana brought the runner home with an RBI single. After stealing second base, Santana came around to score on an error by Bell with two outs. Erbe would keep Akron off the board over the next three innings, but failed to get to the fifth inning for the second straight start, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 4.0 innings.
Akron would tally a single run in the fifth inning against Baysox righty Jim Hoey, as Carlos Rivero lifted a sacrifice fly scoring Matt McBride and making the score 3-1. The Baysox would answer in the top of the sixth, as Bell connected off Barnes for a two-run blast to tie the game at three apiece. It was the first home run from the right side of the plate for the switch-hitting Bell, who finished the night 2-for-4 to raise his average to .372 on the season.
Akron would load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hoey walked Cristo Arnal, forcing in the go-ahead run just as the teams were pulled of the field due to inclement weather. After a 50-minute delay, play resumed as Fredy Deza came on top pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out. Beau Mills greeted the right-hander with a two-run double to right, extending the Akron lead to three.
Akron would break it open in the eighth, as left-hander Ryan Rodriguez came on to pitch for the Baysox. The southpaw struggled with his control, walking three and allowing four hits in a six-run eighth inning for Aeros. McBride and Lonnie Chisenhall each had RBI singles, while John Drennan's two-run double capped off the scoring as the Aeros led 12-3.
The Akron bullpen held the Baysox scoreless over the final 3.2 innings, as right-hander Zach Putnam earned his third win of the season. The loss drops the Baysox 11.5 games behind Akron for the Southern Division lead, but remain 2.0 games behind Reading for second place.
The two teams do battle again tomorrow as RHP Tim Bascom (2-6, 2.24) takes the mound against LHP Eric Berger (0-1, 5.40). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
