Aerodynamics...

Home, Sweet Home...The Aeros are back home to start a quick three-game series with the Bowie Baysox tonight, and Akron comes into play off an 8-1 win at New Britain Sunday afternoon as the club tied a season-high with four home runs en route to the victory. The four dingers were the most for the Aeros since July 27th at home against Erie, and included a pair of solo shots from SS Carlos Rivero. Josh Tomlin got the start and worked five strong innings in stifling heat (the game time temperature was 94 degrees and hit 99 during the contest), while RHP Steven Wright followed with three shutout frames before turning it over to LHP Matt Meyer for a perfect ninth. Tomlin improved to 12-8 with the win, tying him with Reading's Joe Savery for the league lead in victories. Akron struck first thanks to a three-run homer by LF Matt McBride with two down in the top of the first, and the visitors then tacked on two more runs in the second and one in the third to take a 6-0 lead before New Britain was able to get on the board. The Aeros finished 3-3 on their six-game road trip.

Love Me Two Times...Rivero's two home runs Sunday tied an Aeros season-high and also tied a career-high for the youngster from Barquisimeto, VZ, as the 21-year-old had previously hit two homers in a game May 8th, 2007 against Lexington while playing for Lake County. Rivero's latest multi-hit effort was his third in the six games of the road trip, and he batted .368 (7-19) with six runs scored in the visit to New England. In his past 48 games (dating to June 26th), Rivero is batting .294 with 17 walks, nine doubles, six homers, 21 runs scored and 23 RBI. His .237 batting average entering play tonight is his highest since April 15th, and with a .970 fielding percentage he is one-one thousandth of a point behind Connecticut's Brandon Crawford for the league lead among shortstops.

Welcome Back...The Aeros welcomed back a familiar face to the lineup today, as IF Josh Rodriguez has finally been activated from the disabled list after missing more than three months. Unfortunately, Akron made room on the active roster by placing OF Nick Weglarz on the disabled list with shin splints (retroactive to Sunday). Rodriguez missed 101 games with a right hamstring injury, but was having a tremendous start to the year before he was hurt while running the bases April 29th against Harrisburg. The native of Houston and former second-round selection out of Rice University was batting .314 to open the season, and with 15 walks in 18 games was leading the league with a .478 on-base percentage. He is expected to play three innings in the field this evening, and is back to his familiar #12 jersey with newcomer Lonnie Chisenhall switching to #29.

Magic Men...With Sunday's win, Akron lowered its magic number to 13 to clinch the Southern Division and to 12 to clinch a playoff spot. The Aeros are also six wins away from their fifth straight 80-win season, which would set a new league record.
