Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, MD - On Tuesday evening in Binghamton, NY the Baysox extended their winning streak over the B-Mets to six straight with a 9-4 win behind Beau Hale and the bats of Jeff Fiorentino and Bryan Bass.
Miguel Piñango, who has been very effective against the Baysox this season, was roughed up for six hits and six runs through just five frames. The Baysox then added on three more off the Mets' bullpen.
Although Chase Lambin and Michel Abreu put the home team out to an early 3-0 lead with home runs off of Hale, the Baysox began their comeback in the top of the 3rd. With one out, Todd Donovan drew a walk. Bass then belted his third home run since joining the Baysox on a fly ball to right field to cut the Mets' lead to one run.
The fifth inning saw the Baysox take the lead for good as Rayner Bautista beat out an infield single to second base. Pete Shier, who leads the Baysox with a .423 clip against the Mets this season, laid down and beat out an infield bunt, moving Bautista over to second. Donovan then tried to follow Shier with a bunt of his own but reached on a fielder's choice with the force out at third. Bass then drew a walk from Piñango. With the bases full of 'Sox Fiorentino strolled to the plate and belted the team's second grand slam in as many games to give the 'Sox a 6-3 lead.
After Piñango was replaced with Ryan Cullen, the seventh inning saw the Baysox add two more insurance runs on the board to give Hale a comfortable 8-3 advantage. Donovan led off with a single up the middle. Two batters later Donovan force his way into scoring position, stealing his 29th base of the year, which proved to be crucial as the speedster scored on Cory Keylor's 57th RBI of the season, a single on the ground into left field. After Leo Daigle, who pinch hit and replaced Noah Hall in the fifth, drew a two out walk from Cullen, Raúl Chavez drove in Keylor from second on a single through the right side to give the visitors a five run lead.
Aside from giving up a solo shot to Lambin to start the eighth, his second homer of the game, Hale continued to pitch strong through the eighth and retired the side with two men on. His eight innings pitched marked the longest outing for Hale this season.
Two Baysox doubles in the top of the ninth, one by Fiorentino and a second by Daigle led to the final Baysox run of the evening.
Despite giving up four earned runs, including three home runs, Hale picked up his third win of the season and is now 3-4 with a 3.04 ERA.
Piñango was saddled with his seventh loss after fiving up six runs in 5.0 IP.
Donovan was 2-for-4 and scored three times, while Fiorentino went 3-for-4 at the dish, scored twice and knocked in himself for RBI number 47 with home run number 10.
ON DECK: After dropping seven of their first eight encounters with the B-Mets, the Baysox have won six straight games against their out-of-division foe and have evened the season series at seven a piece. Additonally, the Baysox are on a five game winning streak, matching their five game streak that ran from July 22nd to the 26th. Their longest winning streak of the season was a six game streak from June 24th to July 2nd.
Wednesday night James Johnson will face the highly touted Philip Humber as the Baysox look to extend their streak and take the lead in the series.
