Richmond, Va. - After shutting out the Flying Squirrels on Tuesday, Richmond scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead and top the Baysox 4-2 Wednesday night. The loss drops the Baysox back below .500 to 19-20.

After falling one out short of a complete game in his last start against Richmond, right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark lasted just five innings Wednesday. Clark struck out a season-high seven, but allowed three earned runs on six hits as he earned his second loss of the season.

The Flying Squirrels got on the board quickly in Wednesday's game. Richmond scored three runs on Clark in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Roger Kieschnick singled on a ground ball to center field and moved to third on a single to right field by Sharlon Schoop. Mike McBryde plated Kieschnick and moved Schoop to second with a line drive single to center field. Charlie Culberson hit an infield single to shortstop to load the bases and Ryan Lormand drove in two runs with a line drive single to right field to put the Squirrels up 3-0.

The Baysox got one of the runs back in the top of the third inning against left-handed pitcher Ryan Verdugo. Second baseman Greg Miclat drew a one out walk and stole second before designated hitter Caleb Joseph also drew a walk. Left fielder Robbie Widlansky drove in his third RBI in the past two games when he singled on a ground ball to right field to score Miclat to bring the Baysox back to 3-1.

Bowie closed the gap to one run in the top of the fifth inning after center fielder Xavier Avery hit a lead off double to right field. Avery advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Micat and scored when Joseph grounded out to second base.

Richmond extended the lead back to two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning facing right-handed pitcher Tim Bascom. With one out, Juan Perez reached on a missed catcher error by first baseman Brandon Waring and moved to second on a groundout by Kieschnick. Perez scored on a line drive single to center field by Schoop to make the game 4-2.

After struggling to hit with runners in scoring position for much of the past week, Bowie hitters experienced some success on their two runs in Wednesday's game. Widlansky drove in his team leading 20th RBI of the season on a one out single in the third inning after driving in two runs with two outs in Tuesday's game. Joseph also had a productive out to score Avery as he was able to at least put the ball into play and record an RBI.

Richmond was excellent with runners in scoring position and managed to convert eight hits into four runs. The Flying Squirrels were 4-for-5 with runners in scoring position, stringing together five hits in the bottom of the second inning and scoring three runs. The Baysox offense struggled to get hits later in the game, going hitless in the last four innings and falling short of closing the lead Richmond had built.

Bascom pitched two and one third innings in relief of Clark and allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out one. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola pitched two thirds of an inning to finish the game and struck out one while allowing one hit.

In his fourth start against the Baysox, Verdugo earned his second win by pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three.

Tomorrow, RHP Wynn Pelzer (1-4, 3.63) will take the mound for the Baysox. Pitching for the Flying Squirrels will be LHP Eric Surkamp (2-2, 1.86).

The Baysox are on the road Thursday, but return home Friday, May 20 for a three-game home stand. For more information on Baysox promotions and theme nights, visit www.baysox.com.
