Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Binghamton Mets dropped the middle game of its series at New Hampshire 11-3 in a game that was completed after 4 1/2 innings Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium due to persistent rain. The game was delayed 40 minutes due to wet weather before it started and 36 minutes before it was called. It marks the B-Mets third consecutive loss and the sixth in their last seven games.
New Hampshire (24-14) struck for its big inning in the second when 10 men came to the plate against starter Mark Cohoon. The left-hander, who had cruised through a 1-2-3 first inning, allowed a leadoff double to Mike McDade. After Moises Sierra struck out, Travis d'Arnaud put the Fisher Cats on the board with an RBI double to left-center. Craig Stansberry joined d'Arnaud aboard courtesy of a throwing error by third baseman Jose Coronado. Mark Sobolewski magnified the error with a bases-clearing, two-run double to up the lead to 3-0.
Cohoon got Callix Crabbe to groundout to short, moving him within an out of getting out the frame. However, Darin Mastroianni lined a single to right and Adeiny Hechevarria followed him up with an RBI single to center to keep the onslaught going. Anthony Gose provided the exclamation mark with a three-run home run to right-center on a first-pitch fastball. The home run, Gose's second of the year, capped the inning at seven runs, which tied for the most allowed by the B-Mets in a single inning.
Binghamton (13-23) responded with a run in the next inning. Jordany Valdespin lined a single to left with one out. Fisher Cats' starter Zach Stewart balked the runner to second where he scored from when Josh Satin clocked an RBI double into the left-field corner, which trimmed the deficit to 7-1.
The Fisher Cats got the run back with an RBI single from Sobolewski in the third and ran Cohoon from the game with more offense in the fourth. Moises Sierra struck one of the final blows with a two-out, three-run dinger to left-center in the fourth inning, which catapulted the lead to 11-1. Cohoon left one batter later on the hook for his third loss. He was charged with 11 runs - 6 earned - on 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings.
The B-Mets did not hand the win to Stewart without a fight, though. In the fifth, Valdespin worked a leadoff walk. Satin followed with a double to deep center, which put both men in scoring position. After Salomon Manriquez struck out, Brahiam Maldonado tagged Stewart with a two-run double to left-center, making it 11-3.
Stewart tossed five innings, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out a season-best eight for his third win of the season.
The 11 runs allowed were the most given up by the B-Mets this season, who are now a dismal 6-16 away from NYSEG Stadium.
Binghamton wraps up its three-game set in New Hampshire with an early wakeup call for a 10:35 AM contest Thursday. RHP Brad Holt (1-2, 3.12) will start for the B-Mets opposite RHP Rey Gonzalez (4-1, 1.41) of New Hampshire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 10:20 AM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
