Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- Cedar Rapids' bullpen retired 18 of the last 19 batters before walking off in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Kernels (27-19, 58-58) walk-off win by a score of 4-3 began a four-game series against the Cougars (27-19, 72-44).
With the win, the Kernels tied the Cougars for the best record in the second half standings of the Western Division. The Cougars already have a playoff spot secured, which technically allows Cedar Rapids the first place stance.
Both bullpens buckled down after David Garner gave up two runs to the Kernels in the eighth inning. Mitch Garver's RBI single knotted the game 3-3 and brought in Cougar reliever Jasvir Rakkar. The right-hander ended the frame with a groundout and tossed a perfect ninth to bring the game into extras. Engelb Vielma started a promising tenth frame with a leadoff double, but nothing came of it as Rakkar shut down the Kernels' offense again.
Garver's leadoff double in the 11th turned out to have a different outcome. With Francisco Carrillo (0-1) on the mound, Bryan Haar ripped a base hit off the left field wall to score Garver and give Cedar Rapids the win.
The Cougars first took the lead in the fourth inning. When trailing 1-0, Chesny Young doubled home Shawon Dunston Jr., who reached on a triple. Victor Caratini knocked a three-bagger of his own to drive home Young for a 2-1 Cougars' advantage.
Caratini drove home his sixth run in five games since joining the Cougars with a groundout to plate Dunston in the sixth.
Duane Underwood received no decision despite six innings of one-run baseball with seven strikeouts. It was Underwood's fifth quality start of the season.
Cedar Rapids' Dallas Gallant (2-1) earned the win, but also received shutout performances from Jake Reed and Jared Wilson.
The four-game series will continue on Friday. Jonathan Martinez (8-5, 3.40) will make the start for the Cougars against Cedar Rapids' left-hander Stephen Gonsalves (1-0, 0.75). Thursday's game begins at 6:35 p.m. and game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
