Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
Battle Creek, Mich. - Picking up the suspended game in the top of the third inning, the Bombers trailed the Bullfrogs, 3-0. But the Bombers battled back time and time again against the Bullfrogs, eventually pulling out a 12-9 victory.
The Bullfrogs tacked on a run on Marcus Shoemaker's solo shot in the bottom of the third to give the Bullfrogs a 4-0 lead, but the Bombers bats woke up in the top of the fourth.
In the fourth, the Bombers strung together four straight hits off the bats of Daniel Jipping, Eric Gilgenbach, Dan Swain and Christian Helsel as the Bombers plated three runs in the inning, cutting the Bullfrogs' lead to one.
The Bullfrogs would again add a run in the bottom of the fourth, but again the Bombers would battle back, this time to tie the game in the top of the fifth. After Ryan Dorow walked, Jipping and Gilgenbach hit back-to-back singles to bring Dorow home before Helsel's sacrifice fly tied the game at 5.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bullfrogs would again take the lead on Colton Onstott's RBI double, but the Bombers would battle back again in the top of the sixth, this time to take the lead for good.
After Alejandro Gomez singled, Nick Podkul was hit by a pitch and Jarrod Watkins reached on an error to load the bases, Jipping launched a grand slam over the wall in deep center field to give the Bombers a 9-6 lead. Jipping finished the afternoon a triple shy of the cycle, going 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs.
In the seventh, the Bombers would tack another run onto their lead, courtesy of Gomez's RBI single, before the Bullfrogs would make things close once again.
Green Bay would score one run in the bottom of the seventh and eight to cut the Bombers lead to two, but the Bombers would extend it back to four in the top of the ninth as Shoemaker would lose Watkins' fly ball in the sun, scoring Cooper Marshall and Podkul to give the Bombers a 12-8 lead.
The Bullfrogs would score again in the bottom of the ninth, but Edgar Sanchez would nail down the save on a 6-4-3 double play to give the Bombers a 12-9 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Chris Collins picked up the win for the Bombers, as he pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits. For the Bullfrogs, Luke VanLanen took the loss as he gave up the lead on Jipping's grand slam.
The Bombers are back in action for game two of the doubleheader at Joannes Stadium starting at 7:10 CST/8:10 EST, before heading off to Lakeshore for a two-game set against the Chinooks.
