Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
Battle Creek, Mich. - The Battle Creek Bombers (4-3) defeated the Green Bay Bullfrogs (3-4), 3-1, at C.O. Brown Stadium Monday night behind some timely pitching and an impressive pitching performance from starter Jordan Horak.
Horak came into the game standing at 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA, but he cruised through the first five innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five. In the fifth, with the Bombers up 2-0, Horak ran into some trouble as the Bullfrogs loaded the bases and pushed one run across.
But Kaleb McCurry relieved Horak and managed to get out of the inning unscathed as Randell Kanemaru lined into a double play and pinch hitter Zachary Biermann flew out to center field.
The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the third as Ryan Dorow reached on an error, one of five errors on the night for the Bullfrogs. Dan Swain followed Dorow with a walk before Nick Walker doubled to score Dorow, giving the Bombers a one run lead.
Battle Creek would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Jarrod Watkins and Dorow reached on errors by the Bullfrogs and Daniel Jipping doubled to score Dorow after Swain grounded into a fielder's choice.
Up 2-1, the Bombers would add an insurance run in the seventh as Watkins walked, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a wild pitch, increasing the Bombers lead to 2.
Edgar Sanchez would relieve McCurry in the eighth, getting two outs, before Brandon Guske would come on for the four-out save.
Horak picked up his first win of the season for the Bombers, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one run and striking out five, while Mike Ellenbest took the loss for the Bullfrogs. Guske picked up his second save of the season for the Bombers.
Nick Walker led the Bombers at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a single and an RBI double. Ryan Dorow didn't record a hit, reaching on two errors, but scored two of the Bombers three runs.
The Bombers move to 4-3 on the season, while the Bullfrogs drop to 3-4. Both teams will be back in action Tuesday morning for the series finale at 11:05 am at C.O. Brown Stadium.
