Madison Mallards News Release

After coming off a win in the season opener, Justin Watts (Northern Kentucky) is returning to the Duck Pond to make his first home start of this young season. He'll have some momentum, too, as Watts turned some heads in his first start, striking out ten batters of the 14 outs he faced. This time he'll go up against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, who the Mallards beat in a wild one last night.

Entering the ninth inning down a run, a pair of walks set up a Matt Vierling (Notre Dame) gap shot to tie the game with one out and a man on third. Lucas Halstead (Pacific) was then able to drive home the runner with a deep sac fly to right center. A shutdown inning from Luke Shilling (Illinois) sealed the deal and kept the Mallards at a perfect 6-0 mark.

Watts (1-0) will be matched up against Jack Riley (UCONN), the freshman left-hander who will be making his first start of the season. In his first season for the Huskies, the Massachusetts native pitched 21.2 innings, striking out 19 and posting a 6.23 ERA. He was All-State as a senior in high school as well as the Central Massachusetts Pitcher of the Year.

Riley's 2016 debut will be against the hottest hitting team in the Northwoods League, as the Mallards lead the league in hits (80), runs (52), doubles (13) and home runs (9).

The game tonight will feature a Chet's Car Care magnet schedule giveaway. The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board will also sponsor Dairy night, with dairy themed promotions and giveaways. Tickets are available for purchase by visiting MallardsBaseball.com, calling the Mallards ticket office at 608-246-4277, or stopping in the ticket office at 2920 N Sherman Ave.
