Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- The Tornadoes offense exploded for 14 hits and Mike Meagher combined with two relievers on a one-hitter, as the Worcester Tornadoes dominated the Atlantic City Surf, 8-1, at Hanover Insurance Park Friday night.
After awakening from a five-game slumber last night, the Tornadoes bats took it to the next level tonight against the Atlantic City pitching staff. Euvi Solano and Patrick Perry had three hits each and Yohanny Valera, Andrew Wishy and Josh Beauregard had multi-hit games, as the Tornadoes had at least one hit in every inning of the game.
Worcester jumped out with a run in the 1st on a Perry RBI single, added an unearned run in the 2nd, then made it 3-0 in the 4th on a Josh Beauregard RBI single off lefty starter Matt Scheuing (0-2). Worcester would break it open in the 6th, loading the bases after two were out for Valera, the league leader in RBIs. Yohanny came through with a bases-clearing double off Coogie Freedman to make it 6-1, Worcester. Andrew Wishy ripped a two-run line drive home run to right-center off Freedman in the 7th to provide the final tally.
Meanwhile, Tornadoes lefty Mike Meagher (3-2) was flat out dominant. He retired 11 in a row at one point, struck out 8 in his 7 innings of work, with the only blemish, a leadoff solo home run to left by Rob Fischer in the 5th inning. Chris Shank and Ryan Mitchell pitched perfect 8th and 9th innings, respectively, to complete the combined one-hitter.
Meagher (3-2) picked up the victory and Scheuing (0-2) took the loss. The one hit was a season-low for a Worcester opponent. The Tornadoes will look to make it two in a row over the Surf and three straight wins overall when they send righty Matt Weagle to the mound in Game Two of the three-game series on Saturday night. He will be opposed by Surf righty Monte Mansfield. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
