Barton Recalled to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
December 13, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
The Wheeling Nailers, AA affiliate for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced a transaction, effective immediately. Forward Chris Barton has been recalled by the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Barton, 24, who was just signed to a two-way contract by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last week, joins the Penguins, after spending the first two-plus months of his professional career with the Wheeling Nailers. In 21 games with the Nailers, Barton had 15 goals, 11 assists, and 26 points, leading the ECHL in goals and points by a rookie.
After a scoreless opening game in Greenville, Barton netted two goals in his second game at South Carolina, including a shorthanded goal, which stood as the winning goal in a 4-1 triumph for the Nailers over the Stingrays. Later in October, the Calgary, AB native netted a hat trick against the Trenton Titans, giving him the lone three-goal game by a Wheeling player this season.
Barton's success continued into November, when he picked up a point in nine of the Nailers' ten games, scoring seven goals, eight assists, and 15 points. That performance earned him November's ECHL Rookie of the Month Award, and also helped him win the ECHL's Player of the Week Award for the week of November 14-20, when he had six points in three games.
This is Barton's first season of professional hockey, following a four-year career at Merrimack College. In 141 career games as a Warrior, the 5-foot-11 forward had 48 goals, 71 assists, and 119 points.
Barton could make his AHL debut as early as Tuesday night, when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins play host to the Binghamton Senators.
The Nailers return to the ice on Friday night December 16th, at Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35. It is Teddy bear toss night. Bring a new or unused Teddy Bear to toss on the ice after the Nailers 1st goal. For ticket information call the Nailers office at 304-234-GOAL or online at shop.wheelingnailers.com.
