ERIE, PA - Center Earl Barron scored 35 points and pulled down 24 rebounds to lead the Iowa Energy to a come-from-behind 116-111 victory over the Erie Bayhawks Friday.
Iowa, which entered the game on a season-long three game losing streak, jumped out to a 34-20 lead in the 1st quarter as Energy guard Jeff Trepagnier scored nine points in the quarter. Erie trimmed the lead down to two points with 0:54 left in the half on guard Cedric Jackson's layup, but Iowa responded with the final five points of the half to take a 64-57 lead into the locker room. Barron had 25 points in the half for the Energy.
Erie used a 10-2 run midway through the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 84. A 12-2 Erie run to open the 4th quarter, fueled by a pair of Blake Ahearn 3-pointers, gave the home team a 98-90 lead with 8:22 remaining in the game.
Down by six with 2:49 remaining, Trepagnier nailed a 3-pointer for Iowa to cut the lead in half. After the teams exchanged misses, Trepagnier made one of two free throw attempts to cut the lead to two. After an Erie miss, Iowa's Mark Tyndale was fouled on a layup attempt and converted both free throw attempts to tie the game at 108. After another defensive stop, Iowa's Pat Carroll missed a layup attempt on a fast break. Tyndale grabbed the rebound and missed a layup of his own before grabbing the loose ball and converting to give Iowa a 110-108 lead. Tyndale, who finished with 17 points on the night, drew an offensive foul on Erie's Cedric Jackson on the inbounds pass to give the Energy the ball. Iowa's Curtis Stinson drove the lane to give the Energy a 112-108 lead.
The Bayhawks cut the lead to two points on a Jackson free throw with 0:32 left in the game. On the ensuing possession, Trepagnier ended Erie's hopes with a 3-pointer from the left wing.
Trepagnier added 22 points while Stinson finished with 9 points and 13 assists for the Energy, who improve to a perfect 9-0 against Erie on the year.
The Bayhawks fall to 13-25 on the year with the loss. Jackson, who spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier in the season, finished the game with 30 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals. Center John Bryant and guard Mike Gansey each had 24 points for the home team.
A rematch between the two teams will take place Saturday night in Erie at 7pm Central. The Energy return home on Wednesday, March 17th vs. Dakota. For tickets to all Energy home games, call 564-8550 or visit www.iowanba.com.
