TULSA, Okla., March 4, 2010 - Oklahoma City Thunder assigned forward DJ White started the game shooting 10-for-10 from the field, and finished 11-of-14 for a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds as the Tulsa 66ers defeated the Austin Toros 100-88 Thursday night at the Tulsa Convention Center. Thunder assigned guard Kyle Weaver nearly finished with a double-double, contributing 16 points and a game-high nine assists.
An Eddie Basden three-pointer with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter gave the Toros their largest lead of the game at 9-6, but a Larry Owens dunk a minute later gave the 66ers a 10-9 advantage and a lead that they would not give up the rest of the contest. White scored 15 first quarter points, including a dunk with 2:02 left in the period that sparked a 10-2 run, giving the 66ers a 30-19 edge at the end of the period. The 66ers shot 72.2 percent (13-18) from the field, while the Toros made 8-of 21 attempts.
An 8-2 run capped by a Deron Washington lay up to start the second quarter pushed the Tulsa advantage to 38-21 with 8:44 left in the first half. The Toros managed to battle back to within 14 points after a Carldell Johnson three-pointer with 8:03 remaining, but the 66ers put together an 18-5 run to build a 58-31 lead with 1:50 left in the half. Tulsa scored a season-high for points in a half, as they went into halftime ahead 66-37 following two free throws each by White and Owens. The 66ers dished out 20 assists on 27 made field goals in the first half, as they shot 69.2 percent from the field compared to 32.5 percent (13-40) for the Toros.
The 66ers built their largest lead of the contest at 74-41 following jump shots by Weaver and Thunder assigned center Byron Mullens. Tulsa led 85-58 at the end of three quarters, as Mustafa Shakur scored seven points in the period.
The Toros managed to outscore the 66ers 30-15 in the fourth quarter, as they shot 60 percent (9-15) from the field, including going 3-of-7 from three-point range., but could not get closer than within 12 points despite forcing 14 turnovers by the 66ers in the second half.
For the game, the 66ers outscored the Toros 46-26 in the paint, and shot 54.2 percent (39-72) from the field compared to 38.7 percent (29-75) for Austin.
Led by White and Weaver, the 66ers (20-16) had four players score in double-figures. Shakur scored 16 points and dished out seven assists, while Owens notched his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Toros (23-13) were led by Alonzo Gee with 22 points, while Dwayne Jones added a double-double with 16 points and 17 boards. Johnson contributed 17 points off the bench and Basden finished with 13 points.
The 66ers remain at home to face the Dakota Wizards on "Thunder Night" tomorrow at 7 p.m., then face the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Sunday at 4 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. CST. The Toros continue their road trip on Mar. 9 and 10 at Rio Grande Valley.
