Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons walked off with a 6-5 win over the Jackson Generals in their series finale Monday afternoon in front of 5,345 fans at Regions Field.
Jackson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Ji-Man Choi against starter Mike Recchia.
Josh Richmond continued to swing a hot bat, cutting the Generals lead to 2-1 with an RBI double in the second inning against Jackson starter Trevor Miller. Later in the inning, the Barons tied the game at 2-2 on an RBI groundout by Jamie Pedroza.
Michael Earley gave the Barons their first lead of the game with a ringing ground-rule double to left-center in the 3rd, scoring Trayce Thomson and Chris Curley for a 4-2 advantage. Curley's double gave him a 13-game hitting streak, the longest by a Baron this season and tied for the longest streak in the Southern League.
The Generals scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings capped off by a Patrick Kivlehan RBI double in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. Both runs were scored against Kevin Vance who allowed three hits over 1.1 innings.
The Barons crafted the winning rally in the ninth thanks to a pair of Jackson errors starting with a fielding error by third baseman Patrick Kivlehan on a ground ball by Trayce Thompson to lead off the inning. Thompson went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Curley. After an intentional walk to Michael Earley, Rangel Ravelo sent the first pitch by Cam Hobson up the middle on the ground to shortstop Ketel Marte. Marte flipped the ball to second baseman Nathan Melendres to force out Earley but dropped the ball while trying to remove it from his glove. The ball trickled away allowing Thompson to scamper all the way home from second with the winning run, setting off a mob scene at home plate as the Barons celebrated a 6-5 win.
Cody Winiarski (1-2, 3.82) picked up his first win of the season, recording the final six outs of the game in order with one strikeout.
With the win, the Barons improved to 28-37 while the Generals fell to 28-36. TheBarons will enjoy an off-day on Tuesday before welcoming the Montgomery Biscuits to Regions Field for the final series of the first half. The Barons will send RHP Nick McCully (2-5, 5.65) to the hill in game one against LHP Grayson Garvin (0-2, 3.52). First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
