BayBears Sweep Stars in Sunday Doubleheader

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Mobile BayBears (38-24) swept their doubleheader with two wins over the Huntsville Stars (40-23) Sunday evening at Joe Davis Stadium. The BayBears and Stars traded leads in game one but ultimately Mobile came out on top 4-2. Game two, the BayBears took the first lead of the game and did not let it go in a 2-1 victory. With both wins Sunday the BayBears claimed a series victory, recording a win in the first three games in the five game series. Games four and five are scheduled as part of a doubleheader Monday evening.

Huntsville took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one but the BayBears tied the score in the top of third inning when Sean Jamieson hit a two-run homer to left. The Stars reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the third on a Shawn Zarraga two-run home run. Huntsville added another run in bottom of the fourth, pushing the lead to 5-2.

Tom Belza pulled Mobile back with in one-run in the top of the fifth with a two-run single and Belza's heroics continued in the top of the seventh inning. With runners at first and second, two out and Belza at the plate on a 1-2 count, the BayBears were down to their final strike when Belza delivered on a RBI base hit to right, allowing the tying run to score and when the ball rolled past Stars left fielder, Kentrail Davis, Jamieson was able to score the go-ahead run from first and Mobile took a 6-5 lead.

RHP Bradin Hagens (5-2) earned his fifth consecutive win on the mound. Hagens allowed four earned runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out four over eight innings of work. RHP Jake Barrett recorded the final three outs in the seventh inning, sealing the BayBears win while picking up his 10th save of the season.

In game two, Mobile scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Jon Griffin drove home the first BayBears' run with a RBI single in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Mark Thomas pushed across the second run for Mobile with an RBI triple. Huntsville would get one run in the bottom of the fifth but that's all the Stars could get off of BayBears' pitching.

RHP A.J. Schugel (3-1) earned the win, allowing just the one run on three hits, walking two and striking out two over 6.1 innings of work. RHP Kaleb Fleck recorded the final two outs in the seventh inning for his third save of the year.

With both wins, the BayBears are now 4-4 this season in doubleheaders, earning their first doubleheader sweep of the season Sunday afternoon.

Mobile and Huntsville are scheduled to conclude the series with games four and five being played as part of a double header Monday evening beginning at 4:30 PM:
