Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, Ala. - Regions Field is ready for its close-up as CBS Sports Network announcedTuesday that its "ËGame of the Week' will take place in Birmingham on Thursday, August 7 when the Barons take on the Huntsville Stars at 8:05 p.m. CDT. The game was originally scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT but was moved back an hour to accommodate the designated television time block.
The Barons were one of 15 Minor League Baseball ¢ teams selected to host a nationally televised game this season as part of an agreement announced on May 1 between MiLB ¢ and CBS Sports Network. The network has since broadcast from Triple-Aî venues including Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark, Fresno's Chukchansi Park and Memphis' AutoZone Park. Coverage began on Thursday, May 1 (7:05 p.m. ET), when the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, faced the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.
"Since opening in 2013, Regions Field has been a source of tremendous pride for the City of Birmingham," said Barons General Manager Jonathan Nelson. "This broadcast is a great way to showcase our breathtaking ballpark, beautiful city and the Southern League across the country to a national audience. We are thrilled to work with CBS Sports Network and look forward to great coverage of Regions Field in the ballpark's first nationally televised game."
"We look forward to exposing even more fans to the excitement of Minor League Baseball, from top prospects working their way up to the major leagues to the fun and engaging elements our fans enjoy at our ballparks," Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O'Conner, added.
The broadcast crew will be anchored by three-time Kentucky Sportscaster of the year, Dick Gabriel, and former Major League Baseball player Doug Flynn, a two-time World Series Champion with the Cincinnati Reds and Gold Glove winner with the New York Mets.
"Since baseball began its first player draft in 1965, only 21 selections out of nearly 60,000 have advanced directly to Major League Baseball without first playing in Minor League Baseball," said Michael Hand, Chief Marketing Officer for Minor League Baseball and President, MiLBEnterprises. "By televising our games to a national audience, MiLB can feature the next generation of stars at all classifications as they travel The Road to the Show."
