
Barons Take Series With Friday Victory

Birmingham, Ala. - Barons second baseman Victor Mercedes, who was promoted to Birmingham from Single-A Winston-Salem prior to the game, hit a fifth inning, leadoff homerun that ignited a five-run rally to give the Birmingham Barons a 7-2 Friday night victory over the Jacksonville Suns.
With the win Birmingham improved to 25-30 overall while Jacksonville fell to 29-26.
Birmingham opened the scoring in the second inning when Michael Myers singled home two runs against Suns starter Zach Hammes to make it 2-0.
Jacksonville chipped away in the third inning as Chin-Lung Hu drove home a run with a fielder's choice to make it a 2-1 game. Marshall McDougall later hit a leadoff homerun in the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2.
The Barons answered quickly in the bottom of the sixth when Victory Mercedes hit a leadoff homerun to open a 3-2 advantage. Following a single and a walk, Suns starter Zach Hammes was pulled from the game in favor of Mark Alexander. Jeremy Frost singled home two runs while Sean Smith later plated another with a hit to open a 7-2 lead.
Barons reliever Carlos Torres pitched three solid innings to preserve the Birmingham win.
Birmingham starter Wes Whisler improved to 3-6 in the victory with a six-inning outing. Jacksonville starter Zach Hammes fell to 0-2 in the loss after five innings. Torres saved his first game in Double-A.
The Suns return to the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Saturday at 7:05 p.m. to host the Mobile BayBears (Diamondbacks).
