Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Friday night's game between the Lookouts and the Braves is one that cannot be properly recognized or described in a single word. After a 37 minute rain delay to begin the game, the game featured several oddities, which took front stage to an otherwise engaging Lookouts' 7-6 win.
After the rain delay, the Lookouts were the first to enter the scoreboard.
Red-hot Luis Bolivar began the bottom of the first with a single. He advanced to second on a one-out Paul Janish single to left. Enrique Cruz then nailed a two-RBI double to right to give the Lookouts an early 2-0 lead.
While the second inning did not feature any plays of particular interest, Mississippi Manager Phillip Wellman was ejected by home plate umpire Brent Rice. Wellman, a former Manager of the Lookouts, put on a show for his former home crowd, illustrating his disapproval of the umpires' calls on the evening in a highly creative fashion. Despite being the Manager for the opposing team, the Chattanooga fans voiced their vociferous approval of Wellman's antics.
After the Wellman ejection, the Lookouts tacked-on another run in the third on an Enrique Cruz solo shot.
The plot thickened in the fourth, when Mississippi shortstop Mike Rozema took a Luke Lockwood offering over the fence with two men on base, knotting-up the game, 3-3.
With an already interesting main plot, the game's sub-plot of bizarre situations took shape, once again, in the fifth, as Mississippi starting pitcher Kelvin Villa was ejected for using a foreign substance on the baseball. The situation entailed a great deal of heated debate, which resulted in two other Mississippi players being ejected along with Villa.
Another odd occurrence was witnessed by fans in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Calvin Medlock struck out by fouling off a third-strike bunt, the Braves, in stealth-like fashion, implemented the hidden ball trick to catch J.C. Boscan off of first.
With all of the chicanery out of both teams' systems, the Lookouts took the lead in the seventh.
Bolivar started the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Drew Anderson. Janish followed with an RBI single to give the Lookouts a 4-3 lead.
The one-run lead would be a fleeting moment, as the Braves countered in the eighth with two runs of their own. Two singles and a Ray Serrano double highlighted the Braves' rally.
Facing a 5-4 deficit and an 0-25 record in games in which they trail after seven innings, the Lookouts found themselves in a theoretical hole, but Chattanooga would eschew precedent a come away with a big eighth inning and the win.
With one out, Cody Strait started the rally with a single and quickly swiped second. Mississippi pitcher Zach Schreiber, who encountered control problems, then walked Tyrell Godwin and J.C. Boscan to load the bases. After a Tonys Gutierrez strikeout, Luis Bolivar hurt the Braves with his eyes, rather than his bat, by taking a walk, tying the score. Drew Anderson proceeded to rip a line drive two-RBI single to right, which gave the Lookouts a 7-5 lead.
Carlos Guevara came into the ninth and surrendered one run on a Diory Hernandez double, but ultimately finished the game off for the Lookouts, giving him his third save of the series and number six of the year.
Brock Till (1-0), who pitched the eighth inning, was credited with the win for the Lookouts.
Zach Schreiber dropped to 3-1 on the season after relinquishing all three runs in the eighth.
The Lookouts will continue their home stand, tomorrow, with a five-game home stand against the Huntsville Stars. The promotion of the night will be Team Photo Giveaway and Fireworks.
Tickets for this games or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
