Barons Repel Stars, 3-1

Hoover, AL - Jon Gilmore drove in two runs as the Birmingham Barons (13-18, 53-48) repelled the Huntsville Stars (14-17, 51-50) 3-1 in front of 3,476 fans Wednesday night at Regions Park.

The Barons grabbed an early lead in the first inning when Alden Carrithers walked and Jose Martinez singled him to second base. The runners stole second and third base before Carrithers raced home on a Gilmore infield single. Jake Oester drove in Martinez on a line drive single to left field, 2-0.

The Stars cut the lead in half in the fourth inning when Brock Kjeldgaard doubled off the left field wall, scampered to third on a wild pitch and dashed home on a groundout by Steffan Wilson, 2-1.

Birmingham tacked on one run in the sixth inning when Brandon Short legged out an infield single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Huntsville third baseman Zealous Wheeler. Gilmore slapped a single to left field that plated Short, 3-1.

Brandon Kloess (3-0) earned the win in relief after he hurled 3.1 shutout IP while he scattered one hit and three strikeouts. Starter Hector Santiago received a no-decision after permitting one earned run with 3 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3.2 IP. Nathan Jones (SV, 8) earned the save after finishing the game with 2.0 scoreless IP with 1 hit, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Kyle Heckathorn (0-1) was issued the loss for Huntsville after he allowed three earned runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 5.1 IP.

The Barons and Stars play game three of the six-game series at Regions Park with first pitch set for Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Birmingham sends left-hander Charlie Leesman (7-4, 3.91) to the mound and Huntsville features right-handed pitcher Michael Bowman (2-8, 5.34).
