Smokies Get Past Biscuits in Ten Innings

Montgomery, AL - Nate Samson's solo home run in the tenth inning lifted the Tennessee Smokies past the Biscuits on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. defeated the Montgomery Biscuits 9-8 at Riverwalk Stadium. The win improves the Smokies to 58-43 while the Biscuits drop to 50-51 with the loss. The Smokies tied a season-high total with four homers hit in the game.

In the top of the first inning, Tim Beckham would walk and Stephen Vogt singled to put runners on the corners. Henry Wrigley then singled to score Beckham and give Montgomery a 1-0 lead. Tennessee would tie the game inthe second when Josh Vitters hit a solo homerun to make it a 1-1 ballgame.

Montgomery would take the lead back in the bottom of the second when Greg Sexton was hit by a pitch. Kyeong Kang would triple in the next at bat to score Sexton and give Montgomery a 2-1 lead. Ryan Searle then threw a wild pitch to John Shelby to bring Kang home and give the Biscuits a 3-1 advantage.

In the fourth inning, Tennessee cut the lead after Ty Wright led off the inning with a walk. Rebel Ridling singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out and Vitters grounded into a double play to score Wright, cutting the lead to 3-2. The Smokies tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth after Nate Samson led off the frame with a triple and Matt Spencer singled him home on the very next at bat.

Montgomery would take the lead again in the bottom of the fifth. Isaias Velasquez led off the with a singleand moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Shawn O'Malley. Vogt would move Velasquez over to third on asingle and Velasquez would score after that on a Wrigley double to take a 4-3 lead.

The Smokies tied it up in the sixth on a home run by Jim Adduci and later took the lead in eighth with a two run homer by Ty Wright to take a 6-4 lead. Tennessee added one more run in the eighth after Ridling walked andmoved to second on a wild pitch. Vitters singled home Ridling to make it a 7-4 game. Tennessee picked up another run in the top of the ninth to go ahead 8-4, but the Biscuits rallied back to tie the game in the bottom half with a pair of two-run homers, and the game was sent to extra innings. After Samson's homer put the Smokies back in front at 9-8, Stephen Vogt grounded into a double play to end the game.

The Smokies and Biscuits play the second game of their series on Wednesday at 8:05 PM. RHP Marco Carrillo (4-0, 1.22) makes the start for the Smokies and the Biscuits will hand the ball to RHP Chris Archer (4-6, 4.84).
