Knoxville Smokies News Release
Montgomery, AL - It was more of the same for the Smokies against their old teammate, Chris Archer. The right-hander held the Smokies scoreless over seven innings, and the Biscuits went on to defeat the Smokies, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. With the loss, the Smokies fall to 15-17 in the second half and 58-44 overall.
In his third start of the year against his former team, Archer (5-6) gave Tenessee its best chance to score in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Archer induced a groundout from Steve Clevenger to end the threat. The Smokies would never come closer to scoring on the night. RHP Marco Carrillo (4-1) made his second start of the year for the Smokies and looked good in the first inning, as he pitched around an error. In the bottom of the second, Carrillo walked Kyeong Kang to lead off the frame. Kang advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then to third on an infield hit off the bat of John Shelby. Kong then scored on a sacrifice fly from Isais Velazquez to put the Biscuits ahead 1-0.
Montgomery picked up two more runs in the fourth off Carrillo. With one out, Kang hit a solo home run to right field to put the Biscuits on top 2-0. It was Kang's second homer of the series. After Shelby doubled and moved to third on a walk to Velazquez, David Wendt doubled to right field, bringing in Shelby and making it a 3-0 Biscuits lead. They'd score again in the sixth inning as Shelby scored again, this time on an RBI single by Shawn O'Malley.
Junior Lake paced Tennessee with two hits and two stolen bases on the night. Ultimatey, the Smokies ended up going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. They were shut out for the fifth time this season.
The Smokies and Biscuits continue their series on Thursday at 8:05 PM. RHP Trey McNutt (1-3, 4.33) makes the start for the Smokies and the Biscuits will hand the ball to RHP Shane Dyer (4-6, 4.79). Tennessee returns home to start a five game series against the Birmingham Barons on Sunday, July 31, at 5:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased at www.smokiesbaseball.com or by calling (865) 286-2300.
