Birmingham Barons News Release
The Chicago White Sox and Birmingham Barons have announced a series of roster moves effective before tonight's game at Montgomery.
As announced earlier today, RHP Esteban Loaiza has joined Birmingham on a rehab assignment from the White Sox and will start tonight's game, though it is unknown how long his outing will last or how long he will be with the club.
RHP Bobby Jenks, who tossed a scoreless inning at Montgomery last night, has completed his rehab assignment and left today to return to Chicago.
1B Brandon Allen has been received from A-Advanced Winston-Salem. A 5th-Round draft pick out of high school in 2004, Allen was named the starting first baseman for the Carolina League's midseason All-Star Game. He was hitting .279 with 15 HR and 44 RBI in 89 games with the Warthogs. He was second in the league in HR and extra-base hits (45), and was fourth in doubles (26) and slugging percentage (.527). Entering the season, he was named by Baseball America as the Best Power Hitter in the White Sox organization. He has already hit for the cycle and recorded a five-walk game this year, and he ended his Winston-Salem tenure by hitting in six straight games and 10 of his last 11 contests.
Birmingham INF Victor Mercedes has been placed on the temporarily inactive list to deal with family issues.
INF Javier Castillo, who began the season in Birmingham before being promoted to AAA Charlotte in mid-June, has been transferred back to Birmingham. He hit .287 with 18 RBI in 28 games with the Knights.
INF Javier Colina has been transferred to AAA Charlotte. He hit .216 with 3 HR and 14 RBI in 27 games with Birmingham after being received from A-Advanced Winston-Salem in mid-June.
RHP Carlos Torres has been received from AAA Charlotte, where he allowed two runs on six hits in his three-inning debut (and only appearance) last Saturday. He started the season in Birmingham and, at the time of his call-up, was tied for the Southern League lead in wins (9) and was among the league leaders in strikeouts and ERA.
