Mississippi Braves News Release
Tommy Hanson and Rick VandenHurk faced of in a classic pitcher's duel with Hanson and the Braves getting the better of VandenHurk and the Mudcats by a final of 4-1. Hanson allowed one run while VandenHurk gave up two as Mississippi improved to 17-10 in the second half.
Carolina loaded the bases against M-Braves starter Tommy Hanson in the top of the first, but Hanson struck out Lee Mitchell and Grant Psomas to get out of the jam. The Mudcats put a runner on third in the second, but once again, Hanson got out of it unscathed. The got another runner in scoring position in the third, but came up empty for the third straight inning. The fourth was the first inning that the Mudcats didn't get a hit or get a runner in scoring position, but they did get a runner on before Hanson fanned the final two batters to end the threat.
The M-Braves on the other hand made the most of their opportunity in the fourth. Reid Gorecki reached on an infield single to start the inning and Kala Ka'aihue followed with a single to right. Gorecki was moving on the pitch and he scored from first when the ball got away from right fielder Daron Roberts. Ka'aihue moved to second on the mishap and scored when Javier Guzman ripped a double off of the right field wall.
The Mudcats finally got on the board in the fifth. With two outs and Chris Coghlan at second, Gaby Sanchez hit a bloop single to no-man's-land in left-center. Coghlan scored easily from second as a sliding Matt Young was not able to come up with the catch.
Reid Gorecki blasted his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the eighth to give Mississippi a 4-1 advantage. It marked the second time this season Gorecki had hit home runs on consecutive nights.
Hanson gave up a run on five hits through six strong innings and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Hanson improved to 5-3 on the season. Brian Dumesnil and Sung Ki Jung each threw a scoreless inning and Luis Valdez tossed a scoreless ninth to record his 16th save of the year.
Rick VandenHurk gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits through six innings and left the game trailing 2-1 before falling to 3-3 on the year. Jarrett Santos gave up two runs on four hits through two innings of work.
