
Barons Fall at Grand Rapids, 4-1

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Jiri Hulder scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner as Grand Rapids defeated the Barons 4-1 on Friday night. Jamie Holden suffered the loss for the Barons in a strong 34-save effort.
The game's opening goal, scored at the 10:51 mark of the first period, was also the game's only goal through the first ??:?? of action. The Barons were out-shot 17-9 in the opening twenty minutes and surrendered the period's only goal to Jiri Hudler, who scored his 17th of the year on a rebound for the Griffins. Jamie Holden made his 13th appearance of the season for the Barons, spotting Nolan Schaefer a breather after the goaltender made nine straight appearances in goal. Jimmy Howard made his third straight start for the Griffins, who were looking for their fourth consecutive win. The first time this season the Barons skated through a period of hockey without either team receiving a penalty.
A scoreless second period was evenly played with Grand Rapids out-shooting the Barons 11-7. The teams combined for seven minor penalties with Grand Rapids failing to score with three power play chances and the Barons going 0 for 2.
The game remained close until the final 2:08 of the game when Grand Rapids exploded for three goals skating to a 4-1 win over the Barons. Lukas Kaspar scored his fifth goal of the year from Steve Bernier and Tomas Plihal to tie the game at 1-1 at the 8:16 mark. The game remained tied until Clay Wilson snapped a puck over the left shoulder of Holden with 2:08 remaining in the game. The Barons were whistled on a penalty after the goal was scored setting up an insurance marker from Grand Rapids' Donald MacLean on the power play. Kent McDonell finished the Griffins' scoring with an empty net goal and a 4-1 win.
The Barons return home after the holiday to host San Antonio on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm. Tuesday night the first 1,000 kids 14-and under will receive a free Barons souvenir game puck, courtesy of East of Chicago Pizza. Adding to the excitement of Tuesday's affair will be a visit from Fred Flintstone, courtesy of Cox Communications. Thursday night the first 3,000 fans will receive a free authentically autographed action photo of Barons forward Lukas Kaspar.
